Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation’s (APU) Taekwondo Club has made a sensational start in the world of virtual sport, celebrating a remarkable debut as both host and competitor in the inaugural Virtual Reality Taekwondo Championship 2025.

Their 17 selected players made an immediate impact, bringing home an impressive haul of two Gold and ten Bronze medals.

The championship saw a total of 19 teams, and APU’s own contingent shone brightly as Assadulah Mohamed Azvi and Gan Jing Yuan claimed the coveted Gold medals, dominating their respective Young Adults (18-21 years old) Male and Female categories.

The spirit of victory continued with a strong showing in the Bronze medal category by APU athletes Bryan Tan Zhao Yan, Estella Mazuze, Ibaan Ibrahim, Loris Kho En Wei, Mohamed Rifqy Al-Ghifary, Noor Waqad Abdullah Al-Naami, Park Jiyeon, Walid Hashim Abbas Mohamed Ahmed, Goh Yen Ting, and Wong Junkang; each secured a Bronze across the Young Adults (18-21 and 22-25 years old) Male and Female categories.

What makes these achievements even more extraordinary is the relative inexperience many of these competitors had with Virtual Reality competitions.

Despite this, their performances were truly astounding, a testament to their rigorous preparation. The club had conducted specific training sessions leading up to the event, ensuring the players were well-prepared.

“We are incredibly proud of their achievements, and even more surprised by how well they did, considering many were new to virtual reality competitions,” commented a representative from the club.

“Their performance was astounding, but their mentality was, unsurprisingly, amazing.”

Adding to APU’s medal tally, club coach Wong Junkang, who also guided the participants, demonstrated his own prowess by winning a Bronze in the Young Adults (36-40 years old) Male category.

This championship proved to be a valuable and memorable experience for all involved, particularly for those for whom it was their very first tournament.

It was undoubtedly a testament to their dedication and hard work paying off, marking a significant achievement for the APU Taekwondo Club.

The club now looks forward to building on this success and hopes to strive for even greater accomplishments in future competitions.
