Students from the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation’s (APU) Accounting and Finance Club (AFC) recently broadened their understanding of Malaysia’s legal framework with an insightful educational visit to the Federal Court of Malaysia in Putrajaya.

The trip, which took place at the end of April 2025, saw 39 students, accompanied by their club advisor, Mr Kannan Asokan, embark on this valuable experiential learning opportunity.

Organised as part of the AFC’s ongoing commitment to providing practical and real-world learning experiences, the visit aimed to expose students, particularly those specialising in forensic accounting, to the intricacies of Malaysia’s judicial system.

The key focus was on the court procedures relevant to financial and white-collar crime cases.

During their time at the Federal Court, the students were given a comprehensive tour of the impressive court complex.

This allowed them to explore the institution’s museum and library, gaining a deeper appreciation for the history and resources of the Malaysian judiciary.

A particularly engaging aspect of the visit was the interactive question-and-answer sessions held with court officers.

These sessions proved invaluable, offering the students first-hand insights into the judicial process and the crucial role the courts play in addressing complex financial crime cases.

The experience left a lasting impression on the students, offering a unique perspective beyond the classroom.

Khizar Hameed, President of APU’s AFC, said that first-hand witnessing the Federal Court’s inner workings was an eye-opening experience for all the students.

“For those of us focusing on forensic accounting, understanding the legal procedures surrounding financial crime is absolutely vital.

“The opportunity to speak directly with court officers provided a practical context to the theoretical knowledge we have gained in our studies. It is an experience that has undoubtedly enriched our understanding of the justice system.”

Soo Jun Zhang, Vice President of APU’s AFC, also believes that this visit will greatly benefit them and found it incredibly beneficial.

“Touring the complex and learning about its history was fascinating, but the Q&A session was particularly insightful.

“It allowed us to clarify our doubts about court procedures related to financial cases and understand the practical application of the law.

“This kind of experiential learning is invaluable in bridging the gap between academic study and the real world of forensic accounting.”

Ezra Wong Ming Li, a Master’s student, said that as a postgraduate student in Forensic Analysis, this visit provided a crucial perspective on the legal landscape in which financial investigations take place.

“Seeing the environment where cases are heard and having the chance to interact with court personnel offered a deeper appreciation for the complexities involved in prosecuting financial crimes.

“It has certainly reinforced the importance of our field and the critical role forensic accountants play in the justice system.”

This successful educational visit underscores the Accounting and Finance Club’s dedication to providing its students with well-rounded learning experiences that extend beyond the traditional classroom, preparing them for their future careers in the dynamic fields of accounting and finance.
