Recently, students from the School of Business (SoB) at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) embarked on an insightful industrial visit to Westports Malaysia.

Led by Ms Cynthia Mala Paul Dorairaj (Lecturer, SoB at APU), and accompanied by Ms Shailaja Kumar (Programme Leader, Graduate School of Business at APU, and Lecturer, SoB at APU) and Ms Nor Azlin Mohamad (Lecturer, SoB at APU), the visit aimed to provide students with practical exposure to logistics management, port operations, and global supply chain systems, while strengthening industry-based learning experiences, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 4, 8, 9, and 17 (SDG 4, SDG 8, SDG 9, and SDG 17).

Activity 1: Understanding Port growth and Logistics operations

The visit commenced with a comprehensive corporate briefing delivered by Mr Badli Shah Mustafa, Corporate Affairs representative from Westports Malaysia, introducing students to Westports’ development journey and operational ecosystem.

Students gained valuable insights into logistics management concepts, container handling operations, international trade movements, and the strategic importance of ports in facilitating global commerce and ensuring supply chain efficiency.

The session provided students with a broader understanding of how large-scale logistics organisations continuously adapt to increasing trade demands through innovation, strategic planning, and operational excellence.

Activity 2: Experiencing Real-Time Port operations

Experiencing real-time port operations provided students with valuable opportunities to gain deeper insights into both the strategic and operational aspects of port management.

Coordinated by Ms Aisya Nabihah, representative from Westports Malaysia, this segment of the visit allowed students to observe how various logistics activities are carefully planned, coordinated, and executed within a large-scale port environment.

Also, students participated in a guided port tour that allowed them to observe real-time port activities and gain first-hand exposure to the operational environment of one of Malaysia’s leading logistics hubs.

Throughout the tour, students witnessed various activities involving container handling operations, cargo management processes, and the movement of heavy machinery across different areas within the port.

Through direct observation of these activities, students developed a better understanding of how logistics operations are coordinated and managed to ensure efficiency within global trade and supply chain systems.

Activity 3: Exploring Technology and future Infrastructure development

Students were also given the opportunity to observe the development of the upcoming Port 2 expansion project, currently under construction to support future capacity requirements and accommodate increasing global trade demands.

This segment of the visit exposed students to the role of automation technologies within logistics operations, while also highlighting the importance of human expertise and manual processes that remain essential within selected operational areas.

Through these observations, students developed a clearer understanding of how technological advancements and infrastructure development contribute towards strengthening operational efficiency and supporting sustainable growth within the logistics industry.

Student Perspectives

A few perspective from students:

  1. Win Win Swe: “The visit was a valuable and insightful experience, as it allowed me to gain a better understanding of how the port operates, while also giving me the opportunity to visit one of Malaysia’s largest and most well-established ports.”
