APU improved its medal total with our athletes competing in seven sports, achieving a mix of Gold, Silver, and strong Bronze performances.
Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovations (APU) showcased an impressive performance at the Sukan Institusi Pendidikan Tinggi (SUKIPT) 2024, held from 5 to 15 September 2024 at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) in Sintok, Kedah.
SUKIPT is an annual inter-University sports event organised by the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) where students of Malaysian universities compete in a number of sports and representing their respective institutions.
With a spirited contingent of nearly 80 athletes, APU fiercely competed across seven sports, including Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton, Taekwondo, Karate, Swimming, and Squash.
Amidst tough competition from 73 institutions, APU secured a commendable 18th place overall, bringing home a well-deserved haul of two Gold, two Silver, and nine Bronze medals.
Compared to the previous SUKIPT tournament held at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Perak, APU’s achievements this year demonstrate significant progress in the number of medals won.
Although the number of gold medals remained the same and silver medals decreased slightly, the rise in bronze medals from three to nine underscores the university’s commitment to enhancing athletic performance.
APU swimming star, Hii Puong Wei led the charge for APU, securing two Gold medals in the 200m Breaststroke and 200m Backstroke, and one Silver in the 100m Breaststroke.
His teammate Shermann Choong Li Sheng also contributed to APU’s success with three Bronze medals in 50m, 100m and 200m Butterfly events.
APU’s martial arts teams also excelled in the Karate event, where Naquib Shahan Shah Ahmad Nubli earned one Silver medal in Individual Kata and one Bronze medal in the Male Individual Kumite, 55kg category.
Sivasankari Balasubramaniam also secured a Bronze medal in Female Individual Kumite, 68kg category.
APU’s Taekwondo Poomsae Male team, comprising Muhammad Irfan Aiman Zuhairi, Eyu Ji Yuen, and Phoon Kenji, claimed a Bronze medal.
Eyu Ji Yuen and Kendra Moss Ting, representing the Poomsae Mixed Pair team, also secured a Bronze medal.
In Kyorugi Male Below 68kg and Kyorugi Female Below 46kg category, Harikandan Varma Poobalan and Crystal Lee Wan Ning won Bronze medals in their respective weight categories.
APU’s outstanding success in SUKIPT 2024 exemplifies the university’s dedication to providing a well-rounded student experience, both academic and athletic.
APU’s contingent was organised and headed by Mr Ahmad Mohammad, our Student Affairs Sports Executive, who was assisted by Mr Mohamad Ridzwan Abdul Rahim from our Regulatory Compliance Unit.
Both of these staff members stayed with our students throughout the 10-days competition and ensured that all their needs were taken care of.
