The School of Mathematics, Actuarial & Quantitative Studies (SOMAQS) at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) recently hosted a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, offering an SPM Additional Mathematics Workshop for secondary school students from several schools in Bandar Kinrara, Puchong. This initiative aimed to sharpen students' mathematical skills, raise awareness of the importance of mathematics in everyday life, and provide practical insights into the subject’s applications. It also sought to reduce students’ anxiety surrounding mathematics, introduce them to potential careers in the field, and support the local community in meaningful ways.

The day began with an inspiring welcome speech from APU Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr Ho Chin Kuan, followed by remarks from the Head of SOMAQS, Associate Professor Dr Rajasegeran Ramasamy.

Guest speaker and well-known educator, Cikgu Syed Muhd Zahinyr Bin Syed Abdul Rahman, affectionately known as Cikgu Bro, then led an interactive workshop. He guided the students through techniques and strategies for answering Additional Mathematics questions in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination. His engaging approach not only helped students improve their mathematical skills but also boosted their confidence ahead of the crucial exam.

“The workshop was designed to strengthen students’ conceptual understanding, refine their problem-solving abilities, and help them avoid common mistakes,” explained Programme Director Ms Sarah Binti Hj Musa. “We wanted to create an environment where students felt comfortable asking questions, practising their skills, and gaining confidence in a low-pressure setting.”
