APU’s SoMAQS Takes the Lead in National Environment Day 2024
The Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) joined hands with the Department of Environment of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur (JASWPKL), IJM Land, Cochrane National School (SK Cochrane), and the National Defence University of Malaysia (UPNM) to celebrate National Environment Day 2024 on 31st November.
Themed “Alam Sekitar Tanggungjawab Bersama” (The Environment is Our Shared Responsibility), the event brought together diverse communities at the IJM Land Centre of Excellence Gallery, Pantai Central Park, Kuala Lumpur.
Under the stewardship of Ms Hazlina Darman and Dr Rahimah Abdul Rafar from the School of Mathematics, Actuarial and Quantitative Studies (SoMAQS), APU students embraced this meaningful day of community engagement and environmental stewardship.
Inspiring Action Through Meaningful Activities
Graced by Tuan Abdullah Izhar bin Mohamed Yusof, Political Secretary to the Minister of Communication, and Puan Hajah Zuraini Haji Ahmad Tajudin, Director of JASWPKL, the event was packed with impactful activities aimed at fostering environmental consciousness:
- Fun Walk: Participants collected litter along a scenic route, blending fitness with environmental action.
- Terrarium Workshop: Attendees learned to create self-sustaining plant ecosystems, gaining a new appreciation for nature's intricate balance.
- E-Waste Collection: The dedicated drive for proper disposal of electronic waste highlighted the importance of reducing environmental toxins.
Free Medical Check-Up: Promoting holistic sustainability, this initiative underscored the connection between human health and environmental well-being.
Educational and Community Impact
For students and educators alike, the event served as a dynamic learning experience. Students engaged with nature through hands-on activities such as the terrarium workshop and the e-waste drive, fostering creativity, responsibility, and environmental mindfulness. Educators found fresh opportunities to integrate these themes into their teaching, enriching lessons with real-world sustainability practices.
Beyond academic enrichment, the event catalysed community action, inspiring attendees to adopt sustainable practices and reinforcing the message that every individual has a role in protecting the planet.
A Renewed Commitment to Sustainability
National Environment Day 2024 was more than just a celebration—it was a call to action. With every activity, participants were left with a deeper understanding of environmental issues and actionable steps to address them, proving that environmental care is a shared responsibility.
A Thoughtful Reflection
Associate Professor Dr Rajasegeran Ramasamy, Head of SoMAQS, emphasised the importance of such initiatives: “National Environment Day 2024 was a powerful reminder that education and action go hand in hand in building a sustainable future. By involving our students in these meaningful activities, we are shaping not just responsible professionals but also conscious global citizens who recognise that safeguarding the planet begins with each of us.”
Through its active participation, APU showcased its unwavering commitment to sustainability, inspiring future leaders to embrace the cause and make a difference.
