Students from the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation’s (APU) School of Marketing & Management (SoMM) visited MIMOS Berhad. to gain first-hand insights into Malaysia’s innovation ecosystem, exploring emerging technologies such as semiconductor manufacturing, machine learning, reliability engineering, and 3D printing through interactive industry sessions and laboratory tours.

Students from the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation’s (APU) School of Marketing & Management (SoMM) gained valuable industry exposure during an educational visit to MIMOS Berhad., Malaysia’s premier applied research and development centre, where they explored the technologies shaping the nation’s innovation landscape.

Led by Ms Harjinder Kaur, Senior Lecturer and Industry Advisory Panel (IAP) Coordinator, the visit involved undergraduate and postgraduate student’s specialism in Digital Marketing, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Business Analytics, and International Business Communications. 

The visit provided students with first-hand insights into how research, innovation, and advanced technologies contributed to Malaysia’s digital transformation. 

Through interactive presentations and guided laboratory tours, students explored key technological areas including semiconductor manufacturing, machine learning, reliability engineering, and additive manufacturing.

The programme began with a session by Ms Khairunnisa Raimy Kamaruddin from the MIMOS Corporate Communications and Social Media team, who introduced students to MIMOS’ role in advancing Malaysia’s technological capabilities through research and innovation.

An interactive machine learning session and quiz encouraged students to explore emerging technologies while developing their critical thinking skills.

A key highlight of the visit was the tour of the Wafer Fabrication Gallery, led by Ms Rahimah Mohd. Saman, MIMOS Process Engineer, and Ms Nazrah Badaruddin, MIMOS Backend Process Unit Head. 

Students learned how silicon, the foundation of modern electronics, was transformed into semiconductor wafers used in devices such as smartphones, computers, automotive systems, and smart technologies.

The engineers also introduced students to semiconductor manufacturing processes, including photolithography, deposition, etching, packaging, and quality control. 

The session provided insights into the precision engineering, cleanroom environments, and strict quality measures required to produce semiconductor components that power technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), automation, and digital transformation.

Students then visited the Reliability Laboratory, where Mr Bukhari Saifulbahri, MIMOS Senior Engineer, demonstrated how electronic products undergo rigorous testing to ensure quality, safety, and performance.

Through exposure to environmental testing equipment, students learned how products were tested under extreme conditions, including temperature changes, humidity, and accelerated ageing, to improve reliability and consumer confidence.

The visit concluded at the 3D Printing Laboratory, where students explored additive manufacturing and its growing impact across various industries. 

They observed how digital designs were transformed into physical prototypes and learned how 3D printing supports product innovation, faster development cycles, customised production, and cost-efficient manufacturing in fields such as healthcare, aerospace, engineering, automotive, and consumer products.

Although students came from different academic backgrounds, the visit highlighted the growing connection between technology, business, and communication. 

By understanding how innovation influences product development, customer experiences, branding, and organisational growth, students gained broader perspectives on the importance of technology in today’s digital economy.

Ms Harjinder Kaur emphasised the importance of industry engagement in preparing students for future careers.

“The visit provided students with first-hand exposure to advanced technologies while strengthening their understanding of how technology, business, and communication create value. 

“We are grateful to MIMOS Berhad. for this enriching learning experience,” she said.

Students also shared their reflections on the visit and highlighted the value of understanding real-world applications of emerging technologies.

Chin Lok Nee, a Bachelor of Business Management with a Specialism in Digital Marketing student, shared that the visit provided valuable insights into the innovation ecosystem behind modern technologies.

“Learning about semiconductor manufacturing and seeing the wafer fabrication process first-hand helped me appreciate the complexity behind modern digital technologies. 

“It broadened my understanding of how innovation drives business growth and consumer markets.”

Muhammad Masvood Abdullah, a Bachelor of Business Management with a Specialism in AI and Business Analytics student, highlighted the importance of integrating technology and data-driven innovation into business decisions.

“The Reliability Laboratory demonstrated the importance of testing and quality assurance, while the semiconductor facilities showcased the precision required in technology development. 

“The visit reinforced the value of integrating technology and analytics into business decision-making.”

For Citra Ayu Pratiwi, a Master of Science in Digital Marketing student, the 3D Printing Laboratory was one of the most inspiring aspects of the visit.

“It was fascinating to see how emerging technologies accelerate product development and innovation. The experience gave me a broader perspective on the relationship between technological advancement and business strategy.”

Meanwhile, Zikrunnhar, a Master of International Business Communications student, highlighted the importance of communicating innovation effectively.

“Beyond the technical aspects, I gained valuable insights into the importance of communicating innovation effectively to stakeholders, industry partners, and the wider public. 

“The visit highlighted the strong connection between technology, business, and strategic communication.”

APU extended its appreciation to the MIMOS team for their warm hospitality and commitment to knowledge sharing throughout the visit. 

Through engaging discussions, interactive sessions, and laboratory tours, students gained valuable insights into Malaysia’s innovation ecosystem and the technologies shaping the future of professionals in an increasingly technology-driven world.
