APU Foundation Students Promote Responsible E-Waste Disposal and Management

The E-Waste Collection Drive, organised by the School of Foundation (SoF) at the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU), concluded on 25 October 2024 with an impressive achievement—collecting 120 kilograms of e-waste!

Spearheaded by SoF lecturers Ms Nur Azliyana Abdul Kadir and Mr Muhammad Ma’wa Abdul Aziz, the drive underscored APU's commitment to environmental sustainability and education. This initiative not only raised awareness about responsible e-waste disposal but also demonstrated the power of university-industry collaboration.

A Campaign That Sparked Conversations

Key partners, Verdant Solar Sdn. Bhd. and TM Enviro Sdn. Bhd., joined forces with foundation programme students to make this effort impactful. A student-led social media campaign reached new heights with 5,000 engagements across Instagram and TikTok, inspiring conversations on sustainability far beyond the campus. 

“Our team is incredibly proud of the success we achieved through the social media campaign,” shared Jeremiah Putra Nelson, a foundation programme student. “It was amazing to see how our posts motivated others to take action. This experience showed us the power of social media in driving awareness and creating a real impact on the community.” 

His coursemate, Loh Xiao Hui, added, “The E-Waste Collection Drive was a project that taught us the value of teamwork and environmental responsibility. Collecting 120 kg of e-waste is an achievement we’re proud of. This has inspired us to stay committed to sustainable practices and continue making a positive impact.”

From Collection to Education

The collected e-waste was donated to TM Enviro Sdn. Bhd., where it will be properly recycled. On the event day, Mr Desmond Soo, representing TM Enviro, delivered an insightful talk on sustainable e-waste management. “The engagement from students and the broader community was commendable,” he remarked. “This collaboration reinforces our mission to encourage responsible e-waste management, and we look forward to driving more positive change.” 

Verdant Solar's Ms Faridah Hana Abdul Hamid shared similar sentiments, stating, “Collaborating on this initiative was incredibly rewarding. The students' enthusiasm and proactive steps to promote sustainable practices were truly inspiring. This drive showcases the power of partnerships in educating and mobilising communities toward environmental stewardship.”
