Local Education Programmes on Climate at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU)
Our Commitment
At Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU), we recognise that education is a powerful catalyst for climate action. Our local education programmes on climate are designed to deepen understanding, inspire behavioural change, and strengthen community capacity to respond to the impacts of climate change. These programmes align with SDG 13: Climate Action, specifically Target 13.3 — to improve education, awareness, and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction, and early warning.
Through the integration of sustainability principles into teaching, learning, and community engagement, APU seeks to cultivate a generation of graduates who are informed, resilient, and motivated to lead environmental and societal transformation.
Educating for Climate Literacy
Climate education at APU extends across disciplines and learning environments. Within the classroom, sustainability topics are embedded into subjects ranging from engineering and computing to business and media, ensuring that all students are exposed to the scientific, technological, and human dimensions of climate change.
Workshops, student research projects, and awareness campaigns are organised throughout the year to inform and support understanding of key issues such as energy efficiency, biodiversity loss, and carbon emissions. Outside the classroom, student societies and volunteer groups act as active drivers of awareness. Events such as Paws & Plants – World Environment Day, Free Tree Society collaboration, and Public Transport Marathon allow students to experience environmental education in action — learning through direct participation in tree planting, recycling, sustainable mobility, and community outreach. Through these engagements, APU ensures that education not only raises awareness but also strengthens the community’s readiness to act.
Community Learning and Collaboration
APU’s local education programmes on climate extend well beyond the university campus. The university collaborates with non-governmental organisations (NGOs), local councils, and schools to co-design outreach initiatives that bring sustainability education to the wider public. Students have taken part in learning visits to the PJ Eco Recycling Plaza and Ajinomoto Malaysia sustainability visit, where they learned about industrial sustainability, the circular economy, and environmental stewardship in practice.
These collaborations create an applied learning ecosystem in which classroom theory is reinforced through practical observation, dialogue, and partnership with community actors. By bridging university knowledge with community needs, APU contributes to local climate literacy — ensuring that environmental education measures inform and support both personal and collective responsibility for climate action.
Capacity Building and Institutional Integration
Faculty members and administrative staff play an essential role in embedding sustainability within APU’s institutional framework. Training, research, and internal dialogues are conducted to integrate SDG 13 themes into curricula, strategic planning, and operational processes.
This includes developing climate-related projects under the APU Knowledge Transfer Programme (KTP), incorporating environmental modules into academic programmes, and promoting sustainable procurement and energy-management practices across campus facilities. By strengthening capacity within its own community, APU ensures that local education on climate becomes a living practice — one modelled daily through campus operations and decision-making.
Measuring Progress and Continuous Improvement
APU monitors its impact through the APU SDG Report, which documents educational initiatives, partnerships, and sustainability milestones aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This transparent reporting framework enables reflection, evaluation, and improvement of climate education outcomes, ensuring that initiatives remain effective, measurable, and aligned with institutional and national priorities.
Looking Ahead
Through its local education programmes on climate, APU reaffirms that education is both an enabler and a driver of climate action. By embedding sustainability into teaching, research, and community collaboration, APU cultivates awareness, empathy, and responsibility — preparing future leaders to make evidence-based decisions and advocate for a low-carbon, climate-resilient society. These efforts reflect APU’s broader vision: to create a university culture where climate understanding inspires tangible change, and where every learner contributes to shaping a sustainable future.
