Preparing Future Professionals with a Solid Foundation for the Real World

A well-rounded education encompasses not only academic knowledge but also an awareness of real-life issues that affect students’ daily lives. In response to students' concerns about safety and legal awareness, the School of Foundation (SoF) at the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) organised a special event for 400 pre-university students, featuring insightful talks by experienced professionals. 
 

This was brought to life in mid-April 2025 through a thought-provoking talk entitled "Crime and Law in Malaysia". The session featured two distinguished speakers: retired Assistant Commissioner of Police Choo Lily and retired Superintendent of Police Thamarai Letchmi Muthusamy.

This initiative aimed to address pressing questions related to personal safety and the law, empowering students with practical knowledge to navigate the world more confidently and responsibly.

Insights from the Frontlines of Law Enforcement

Held on APU’s vibrant campus, the event welcomed academics and a keen audience of pre-university students. Superintendent Tamaraiselvi (RTD) captivated attendees with gripping accounts from her over a 30-year career with the Royal Malaysia Police.

Sharing real-life stories and personal experiences, she shed light on the serious impact of crime on individuals and communities. She also urged students to be proactive citizens by staying informed about their rights and responsibilities under the law.

Following this, Assistant Commissioner Choo Lily (RTD) delivered an engaging presentation on Malaysia’s legal system. She explained the structures that underpin the system, common types of crime reported in the country, and the procedures followed in criminal investigations. Her approachable style and use of relatable examples made complex legal concepts accessible and memorable for the young audience.

Relevance to Today’s Challenges

This session was not just an academic exercise—it resonated deeply with current societal issues. Students were particularly struck by the rise in cybercrime, drug abuse, and juvenile delinquency in Malaysia, especially among young people.
