On 14th March 2025, International Relations students at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) had the opportunity to attend an engaging educational lecture delivered by Professor Faten Ghosn from the University of Essex, England.

Professor Ghosn serves at the faculty in the Department of Government at the University of Essex and on the affiliated (Non-UA) faculty at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Arizona, United States.

She has received several research awards, including the Minerva Initiative funded by the Department of Defence and the U.S. Army Research Office, as well as several teaching awards, both undergraduate and graduate.

Titled ‘Refugee Journeys: Unpacking Causes, Community Impact, and Resettlement Paths’, the thought-provoking session centred on a compelling case study examining the attitudes of Syrian refugees residing in Lebanon.

The lecture, meticulously coordinated by Mr Mohamed Eliyas Hashim, a Lecturer in International Relations within the School of Business (SoB), in collaboration with APU’s Student Affairs Division, has left an indelible mark on the attending students.

It fostered a significantly deeper understanding of the intricate complexities inherent in refugee crises and illuminated the poignant human experiences that lie at their core.

Professor Ghosn’s lecture provided APU students with a comprehensive overview of the multifaceted nature of refugee crises.

This in-depth exploration of the subject matter significantly improved the students’ intellectual understanding of major global issues, providing them with the information needed to critically analyse and engage with empirical data and research findings with better competence.

With meticulous detail, Professor Faten Ghosn unpacked the underlying causes of displacement, the wide-ranging impacts on communities, and the often-arduous resettlement paths that refugees are compelled to navigate.

A particularly significant impact of the lecture was the palpable development of empathy amongst the students.

Through the presentation of real-life scenarios and the often-harrowing challenges faced by refugees, Professor Ghosn skilfully encouraged students to step into the shoes of those forcibly displaced from their homes.

This powerful emotional connection fostered a profound sense of empathy, enabling students to appreciate the deeply human dimension of refugee crises, moving beyond mere statistics and fleeting headlines.

Social and Cultural Awareness Sharpened

The lecture played a crucial role in reshaping perceptions and significantly raising awareness concerning the social and cultural dimensions of refugee issues.

Professor Ghosn’s recent lecture did not shy away from the often-stark realities faced by refugees, challenging the damaging perception of them as mere threats.

As Mr Mohamed Eliyas explained it, “The session compellingly presented refugees as individuals with intricate personal histories and a wealth of diverse experiences.”

“This fundamental shift in perspective”, he pointed out, “Is critical for developing a more inclusive and understanding society.”

For APU’s International Relations students, the insightful lecture extended far beyond simply raising awareness.

It delved into the critical policy implications surrounding refugee resettlement and integration.

The active engagement of APU students during the question-and-answer (Q & A) session, where they further explored the complex attitudes of refugees towards returning from Lebanon to Syria, underscored the lecture’s profound impact.

Inas Adam Ibrahim, from the Maldives, explained, “We gained valuable knowledge regarding the importance of striking a balance between proactive resettlement efforts and the vital need to improve conditions within host countries to encourage voluntary repatriation under safe and dignified circumstances.

“This nuanced understanding empowers us to form well-informed opinions and actively engage in meaningful discussions concerning policy decisions that directly affect the lives of refugees.”

The lecture’s emphasis on rigorous empirical studies also significantly bolstered the students’ academic skills.

Muhammad Aliff Iqbal Mohd. Kamal from Malaysia commented, “We gained valuable insights into the methodologies employed in conducting surveys and undertaking data analysis, effectively preparing us for future research endeavours.”

He added, “For those of us aspiring to careers in international relations, social work, and public policy, the lecture provided invaluable inspiration and practical knowledge, effectively bridging the gap between academic theory and real-world application.”

Thohira Azhaaru from the Maldives highlighted the broader impact, stating, “The ‘Refugee Journeys’ lecture made a significant contribution to the holistic development of our studies.

“It seamlessly combined intellectual growth with the cultivation of emotional and social awareness, culminating in a well-rounded and enriching educational experience. The interactive nature of the lecture ensured we remained actively engaged and participated enthusiastically, rendering the learning experience both impactful and truly memorable.”

Finally, Natsuki Eguchi from Japan explained that “In essence, Professor Faten Ghosn’s compelling lecture on refugee journeys has left a lasting and positive impact on the International Relations students of APU.”

Other students who participated unanimously stated that it enriched their understanding, deepened their empathy, and sharpened their critical thinking skills, all while preparing them to engage thoughtfully with pressing global issues and positively contribute to society.

By hosting this lecture, APU’s SoB has demonstrated the transforming potential of education in developing knowledgeable, caring, and socially responsible individuals.
