Organised by the School of Marketing and Management (SoMM), this engaging visit offered students from the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Media and Communication Studies programme a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of professional broadcasting.

The initiative was spearheaded by Ms Nurjahan Othman, a dedicated SoMM lecturer, with strong support from Dr Mohanaapriya Sina Raja—a seasoned newsreader at RTM and part-time lecturer at APU—and Mr Waqiuddin Afif Mat Saad from RTM’s Corporate Communications division.

Bridging Theory with Real-World Practice

Media and Communication students from APU seized the opportunity to go on air with Nasional FM during their industrial visit to RTM and took a group photo following the live session.

Spanning Year 1 to Year 3, the participating students are currently undertaking Contemporary Media Studies and Broadcast Journalism modules. The visit provided them with real-world exposure that brought classroom theories to life.

Throughout the half-day tour, students were guided through various departments within the RTM complex, including radio and television studios, control rooms, and production areas. Their exposure was not merely observational—they had the chance to witness live radio broadcasts in action and engage directly with RTM professionals who shared practical insights into news production and broadcasting workflows.

On-Air Moments and One-on-One Mentorship

One of the most exciting highlights was the opportunity to go on air with Nasional FM and TraXX FM. This unique hands-on experience gave students a taste of the fast-paced, high-stakes environment of live broadcasting. They also enjoyed one-on-one sessions with an experienced RTM host and in-house producer, offering a closer look into content curation, audience engagement, and technical coordination behind the scenes.

Tech Meets Talent While Exploring Broadcast Innovation

The students were also introduced to cutting-edge broadcast technology during their visit. They interacted with green screen setups and gained insight into the use of the Jimmy Jib, a specialised camera crane designed to deliver smooth, sweeping shots widely used in film and live event production.

This exposure demonstrated how technology and creativity intertwine in delivering high-quality media content.

From Inspiration to Career Readiness

Reflecting on the visit, Ms Nurjahan commented, “Such industrial exposure helps students to better understand their study and career pathways, preparing them for the dynamic demands of the media and broadcasting industry.”

Indeed, the experience allowed students to connect their academic learning with the professional expectations of the field.

The insights gained during the visit enriched their understanding of media practices, broadened their perspectives, and ignited fresh motivation to pursue excellence in the broadcasting world.

As APU continues to bridge academic learning with industry engagement, such visits stand as a testament to the university’s commitment to nurturing career-ready graduates. With opportunities like these, APU students are not just learning about media—they are living it.
