A Medieval-Inspired Charity Event Uniting Fun, Purpose, and Community Spirit

In an inspiring demonstration of creativity, social awareness, and community engagement, the School of Foundation Studies (SoF) at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) proudly hosted Battle of the Undergrads (BOTU) — an immersive, medieval-themed charity event held in conjunction with APU’s Neon Run 2025.

The event, which took place on 21st June at the university’s iconic campus in Technology Park Malaysia, successfully raised RM1,200 in support of local charitable causes.

BOTU was conceptualised and led by Mr Muhammad Danish Johari, supported by Ms Iman Danish, both lecturers within the School of Foundation Studies. Their shared vision was to design an experience that seamlessly combined entertainment with tangible social impact — a vision brought to life through a series of thoughtfully crafted interactive activities.

The event attracted a total of 114 student participants, each contributing a modest registration fee of RM10, with many voluntarily participating in multiple game rounds, thereby increasing the overall donation pool.

The enthusiastic response from the student body reflected not only their enjoyment of the event but also their collective commitment to meaningful causes.

BOTU’s unique setting transported participants into a reimagined medieval world, complete with thematic challenges that engaged both mind and body. Students assumed the roles of knights, adventurers, and heroes on a quest for victory — all in the name of charity.

The entire university ground was transformed into a spirited ‘kingdom’, echoing the grandeur and mystery of folklore while celebrating community-driven purpose.

Interactive Challenges Inspired by Medieval Legends

Participants navigated through five handcrafted game booths, each representing a different facet of medieval life and warfare. These included:

  • Archery Challenge – Participants tested their marksmanship using foam-tipped arrows within a custom-designed archery range.
  • Catapult Launch – A functional, manually operated catapult, constructed entirely from repurposed materials, allowed students to launch soft projectiles at designated targets.
  • Castle Raid – A puzzle-based physical challenge that required teams to infiltrate a fortress constructed from recycled cardboard and PVC piping.
  • Relay Race – A physically demanding obstacle course that simulated the rigours of medieval battlefields.
  • Sword Fights – A spirited foam sword duelling station where participants engaged in mock combat in a controlled and safe environment.

Completion of all five challenges was mandatory for participants to be eligible for prizes, encouraging full immersion in the event’s thematic and charitable objectives.

Student Volunteers: The Unsung Heroes of BOTU

Central to the success of BOTU was the unwavering dedication of 29 student volunteers, whose contributions extended far beyond event-day coordination.

These volunteers were instrumental in the construction, design, and operational management of the entire event infrastructure.

Their craftsmanship was particularly evident in the building of the functioning catapult and large-scale cardboard castle — all produced from recycled materials, reflecting an admirable commitment to sustainability and innovation.

This hands-on involvement fostered essential skills such as leadership, project management, collaboration, and environmental awareness. It also ensured minimal expenditure on materials, thereby maximising the amount channelled directly to charitable causes.

The Battle of the Undergrads epitomised APU’s mission to deliver a holistic educational experience — one that extends well beyond academic achievement. It served as a valuable platform for experiential learning, where students were encouraged to apply creativity, develop interpersonal competencies, and contribute meaningfully to society.

Through this initiative, SoF reaffirmed its dedication to cultivating socially responsible, action-oriented graduates. The event not only brought immense joy and excitement to the university community but also instilled a deeper understanding of the power of collective action in driving positive change.

A Legacy of Impact and Imagination

The students’ craftsmanship utilised entirely recycled materials, reflecting a commendable commitment to sustainability and innovation. At the Relay Race station, participants faced a physically demanding obstacle course that simulated the rigours of a medieval battlefield.

From the triumphant cheers echoing from the sword-fighting arena to the camaraderie shared at the castle photo backdrop, BOTU captured the imagination and hearts of all involved. It was, above all, an event driven by community spirit, innovation, and altruism.

More than a festive celebration, Battle of the Undergrads stands as a testament to what is achievable when creative ambition aligns with compassion. It has left a lasting legacy on APU’s campus — not only as a successful charity event, but as a shining example of how student-led initiatives can make a meaningful difference.
