The top prizes awarded to the Next-Gen Kompang Chatbot: Revolutionising Conversations with AI and Unravelling the Optimisation Power of Automated Asset Allocation projects, developed by APU students and faculty members; emphasised the importance of collaboration, mentorship, and APU’s supportive learning environment, particularly its specialised AI programme.

The Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU) has celebrated a remarkable triumph at the ERA Inter-Varsity Innovation Competition 2024, securing one Gold and one Bronze awards.
The Einstein Research Academy (ERA), an international platform fostering collaboration among academics, researchers, and students, hosted the prestigious event.
Level 1 Artificial Intelligence (AI) students Tan Wai Ken, Lim Jia Leong, and Samantha Tee Ker Xin, mentored by Associate Professor Ts Dr Vinothini Kasinathan from the School of Computing (SoC), developed the Gold-winning project, Next-Gen Kompang Chatbot: Revolutionising Conversations with AI, which demonstrated impressive resilience.
Following initial challenges at the International University Carnival on E-Learning (IUCEL), they diligently refined their project with guidance from their mentor and support from APU.
Crucially, they utilised a real Kompang, provided by APU, for user acceptance testing, ensuring a polished and user-friendly experience.

Tan Wai Ken, the group leader, expressed his gratitude, “We are deeply grateful to Dr Vino for introducing us to this incredible competition and I am also immensely thankful to my teammates, Samantha and Jia Leong, for their hard work and teamwork.
“Winning Gold was an unforgettable moment, proving that effort and collaboration truly make a difference. The team emphasised the value of Dr Vino’s feedback and the experience gained from previous competitions.”
Recognising the international audience, they also focused on clearly explaining the cultural significance of the Kompang.
The students praised APU for its vibrant and inclusive learning environment, particularly its computer science degree with a specialisation in AI.
They highlighted the frequent AI workshops and competitions, which have deepened their understanding of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and provided valuable additions to their CVs.

In the Bronze category, Dr Ahmad Danial Zainudin, a Senior Lecturer from APU’s School of Accounting and Finance (SoAF), and Ms Nuryasmin Wahida Hamil, a Lecturer from the Faculty of Business and Communication at INTI International University Nilai, were awarded for their project.
Their project, Unravelling the Optimization Power of Automated Asset Allocation promotes the use of automated asset allocation for investment portfolios.
Dr Ahmad explained, “Automated asset allocation uses AI and machine learning to optimise asset distribution within a portfolio, maximising returns while managing risk.”
Unlike traditional methods, this data-driven approach enables automated fund and asset allocation, enhances risk diversification, and lowers costs by reducing portfolio management fees and expenses.
“We also provide evidence that even novice investors can independently manage and optimise their fund allocations, reducing reliance on stockbrokers and minimising effort and costs, which aligns with the government’s aspiration to raise awareness of how AI can improve lives.”
These successes highlight the power of collaboration, mentorship, and innovation, reflecting ERA’s commitment to supporting scientific endeavours across various institutions.
