The School of Marketing and Management (SoMM) at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) recently organised an insightful industrial visit to Canon Opto on 19th February 2025.

Led by Ms Harjinder Kaur (Senior Lecturer and IAP Coordinator, SoMM at APU), this visit provided students an in-depth understanding of sustainable manufacturing practices, cutting-edge technological innovations, and the integration of environmental responsibility into modern industry.
Activity 1: Exploring the Water Treatment Plant

Through expert guidance, students gained a comprehensive understanding of water management cycles, including wastewater collection, treatment, and discharge.
The session emphasised the importance of treating wastewater to prevent environmental pollution, ensuring that purified water is safely reintroduced into the ecosystem.
It also highlighted the vital role of wastewater treatment in maintaining public health and sanitation.
Activity 2: Exploring the Bin and Waste Management Centre
Through hands-on learning, students explored waste management and recycling practices at the Bin and Waste Management Centre.
They gained insights into waste sorting, recycling, and proper disposal while also learning about sustainable initiatives aimed at minimising environmental impact.
The session further demonstrated how businesses can integrate effective waste management strategies into their daily operations.
Activity 3: Exploring the Moulding and Metal Department
Through an immersive learning experience, students gained valuable insights into high-precision optomechanical component manufacturing.
Under expert guidance, they explored advanced techniques such as lens polishing, glass molding, and specialised coatings, along with the role of automated in-house systems in streamlining production and ensuring quality control.
The session also highlighted how digitalisation enhances efficiency, from parts inventory management to final product shipping.
Activity 4: Exploring the Lens Gallery
As for this session, it focused on optical technology and its diverse applications, providing students with insights into the principles of optics and the development of high-precision lenses.
They explored the impact of optical technology on photography, medical imaging, and consumer electronics, as well as potential career opportunities in optics, photography, and imaging solutions.
Student Perspectives
Muhammad Abdullah Ashfaq, a student from Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Marketing Management with a specialism in Digital Marketing, found the visit insightful as it connected his academic knowledge with industry innovations, recognising Canon’s commitment to research and development in optical technologies and its potential for career development.
