APU Actuarial Innovators sharpen Skills in PythonLab Hackathon Workshop

The Actuarial Science Club (ASC) at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) hosted a hybrid workshop titled “PythonLab: A Hackathon Case Study Workshop” on 11th July 2024.

The workshop, thoughtfully crafted by the ASC team, aimed to empower students with practical skills and hands-on experience to excel in data-driven problem-solving.

The workshop featured Mr Gabriel Ryan, Vice President of Regulatory Portfolio Analytics and Risk Management Group at DBS Bank Singapore, who led students through a comprehensive exploration of essential data processing and predictive modelling techniques using Python.

Mastering Data handling with Python

The workshop kicked off with Mr Gabriel demonstrating critical data cleaning, manipulation, and grouping techniques using a Python script on Google Colab.

Additionally, students learned about key Python packages such as NumPy and pandasql, which are fundamental for efficient data handling.

Unveiling the Power of predictive modelling

The session then transitioned into predictive modelling, where Mr Gabriel illustrated how to build and evaluate prediction models using data visualisation to highlight key insights.

Students were introduced to various model evaluation techniques, emphasising practical applications of theoretical knowledge.

Moreover, they explored how these techniques can be used to tackle real-world data challenges effectively.

Applying Skills in a Real-World Case Study

The final session of the workshop immersed students in a hands-on case study, where they were divided into groups of three and given 30 minutes to solve a problem, simulating a dynamic hackathon environment.

Each group then presented their solutions and received constructive feedback from Mr Gabriel, who also shared his own approach to the case study.

This interactive segment provided a practical application of the Python skills learned earlier, enhancing students’ understanding of real-world problem-solving.

Tools for a Bright Future

The workshop played a pivotal role in equipping students with crucial skills for their professional journey.

Through Mr Gabriel’s detailed instruction on data handling and predictive modelling, students gained practical insights into applying Python in real-world scenarios.

This hands-on experience, coupled with the interactive case study, provided students with a robust foundation to excel in their careers.
