A Student’s Journey: Interning in Paradise

Mariyam Samha Shareef, an APU’s SoGHT student embarked on a fulfilling internship at the Maldives Ministry of Tourism, gaining invaluable insights into the country’s thriving tourism industry.

Mariyam Samha Shareef, a Tourism Management student at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation’s (APU) School of Global Hospitality and Tourism (SoGHT) could not contain her excitement as she reflected on her educational journey. 

Mariyam expressed her deep appreciation for the programme and the incredible opportunities it’s provided. 

She emphasized how APU has enriched her life and helped her grow academically and personally, leaving her feeling truly fulfilled. 

As a Maldivian, she is happy and thrilled to have the chance to intern under the Maldives Ministry of Tourism

This unique opportunity allows her to put her academic knowledge to the test in the heart of the country’s world-renowned tourism industry. 

Mariyam is now immersed in the vibrant Maldivian tourism scene, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in a sector renowned for its breathtaking beauty and hospitality.

Tourism is the backbone of the Maldives economy.


“I was eager to dive into a globally recognised tourist hotspot and learn from the experts shaping its tourism landscape,” Mariyam explained, added “The chance to work alongside industry leaders and policymakers in the Maldives Ministry of Tourism was an irresistible opportunity.”

Her responsibilities included assisting with planning, monitoring, and implementing tourism-related initiatives, contributing to the development of the Maldives’ tourism sector.

One of Mariyam’s most memorable experiences was participating in local holiday celebrations within the Ministry. 

These festivities allowed her to immerse herself in Maldivian culture and build stronger connections with her colleagues.

Looking ahead, Mariyam expressed her aspirations to work in the tourism industry, focusing on policy development or sustainable tourism initiatives.

“I aim to play a role in ensuring that tourism growth goes hand-in-hand with environmental preservation,” she said.

Mariyam encouraged other students to seize opportunities to learn in diverse cultural and professional settings. 

“Adaptability and an open mind are key to personal and professional growth,” she advised. 

“Be proactive, communicate effectively, and show a willingness to learn, even if it means taking the initiative on projects outside your assigned duties.”

Mariyam also shared a valuable lesson she learned during her internship, “Adjusting to the fast-paced work environment was challenging at times, especially when juggling multiple tasks.” 

However, by improving her time management and staying organised, she was able to overcome this obstacle and fulfill her responsibilities effectively.

Mariyam’s internship at the Maldives Ministry of Tourism was a transformative experience that equipped her with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue a successful career in the tourism industry.
