The Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation’s (APU) Women’s Empowerment Club (APUWEC) hosted a successful community outreach event at the Ayaz Sewing Centre in Selayang, Selangor, providing education, promoting inclusivity, and donating.

The APUWEC, operating under the Driving Girls in Technology, Growth & Leadership (DIGITGAL) Student Chapter, promotes gender diversity in tech.

The outreach event brought together students, committee members, and the local refugee community for a day dedicated to building empathy, sharing skills, and fostering inclusion.

This initiative also served to advance several of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), showcasing a commitment to global well-being.

Led entirely by Rishita Gloria Rozario and Nuramisha Abdul Manaf (student project managers) and with guidance from advisor Dr Meera Eeswaran, the initiative was part of the club’s long-standing commitment to supporting refugees.

The Ayaz Sewing Centre, a safe community hub that regularly hosts educational and empowerment activities, provided the perfect setting for the day.

This collaborative effort between APUWEC and APU also exemplifies SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, demonstrating how local institutions can work together to create meaningful change.

A day of connection and learning

The programme kicked off with warm introductions and icebreakers, quickly creating a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

Refugee children participated enthusiastically in educational sessions, learning about the importance of education and essential topics like ‘good touch’ and ‘bad touch’.

This direct contribution to SDG 4: Quality Education aims to ensure inclusive and equitable learning opportunities for all. Their curiosity and active participation brought a lively energy to the room.

The learning continued with action songs, games, and creative activities, filling the centre with smiles and laughter.

This was followed by skill-sharing sessions where both students and refugees exchanged practical skills and cultural experiences, bridging the gap between their communities.

A special highlight of the day was the presence of Miss Supranational Malaysia 2025, Ms Eshwin Kaur.

She delivered an inspiring speech, and her message on the importance of education, which encouraged the children to dream big and pursue their goals with determination, resonated deeply with everyone present.

Beyond the day’s activities, the club made a significant impact by delivering donations worth nearly RM1,000, along with much-needed resources such as second-hand sewing machines, clothes, toys, and books.

These contributions will provide vital support to the community, and the visit successfully reinforced APU’s commitment to social responsibility and student-led community service.

By breaking down stereotypes and encouraging mutual understanding, the programme directly supports SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities. It empowered young leaders to make a real, lasting difference in the lives of others.
