Seven student athletes from Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) recently showcased their talent at the MASISWA-Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TARUMT) Varsity Squash Open 2025.

The two girls and five boys competed fiercely, with three of our players achieving outstanding results especially in the Premier and Division 1 Categories.

In the Men’s Premier category, our student Pradeep Dev Prakash, Data Informatics students, secured an impressive Bronze finish.

His journey to the podium began with a dominant performance in the group stage, where he defeated Low Wa Tze from Quest International University (QIU) with a commanding 3-0 victory (11-2, 11-3, 11-3).

Pradeep continued his winning streak in the quarter-finals, overcoming Kuhen Manimaran from Sunway University in a thrilling four-set match (12-10, 9-11, 11-7, 11-5).

Although he ultimately lost to Tay Jun Qian from INTI International University & Colleges in the semi-finals (8-11, 5-11, 7-11), his strong performance earned him a well-deserved Second Runner-Up.

Reflecting on his achievement, Pradeep said, “This was a tough but rewarding tournament. My goal was always to give 100% in every game, and I am proud to have secured the bronze medal after some really challenging matches. This result gives me a lot of motivation to train even harder for the next one.”

He added that, “Throughout the tournament, I faced a few tough opponents. But I told myself to just give it my all, and that is exactly what worked.

“My strategy was simple, never underestimate anyone and always give my absolute best, regardless of whether I was playing a weaker opponent.”

Alston dominated his group stage matches, first defeating Amir Khuzairi from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) 3-0 (11-2, 11-5, 11-7), and then securing another 3-0 victory over Fernando Richard from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) (11-1, 11-1, 11-3).

His winning streak continued in the quarter-finals against Muhammad Khairi from UiTM (11-6, 11-1, 11-6) and in the semi-finals against Albert Chin from TAR UMT (11-7, 11-2, 11-6).

In a hard-fought final, Alston faced Muhammad Akif from UiTM, ultimately finishing as First Runner-Up after a gripping five-set match (11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 2-11, 11-7).

Reflecting on his achievement, he said, “This is my second time participating in this championship and I try my best to beat every round’s opponent, put my 100% effort in every match and never give up until the match finishes, and this competition let me not be afraid of facing different challenges.”

Lee Yi Guan then faced Leong Kai Heng from KPJ Healthcare University College in the final, where he secured the top spot with a decisive 2-0 win (11-2, 11-6).

When asked about his success, he shared his philosophy to “Staying composed and enjoying the process of playing. Learn to respect others and enjoy the competition.”
